SPICED TEA - ‘Masala Chai’


Packed with goodness, this recipe is a firm family favourite of the chaYkra sister founders. Having their mum’s special masala tea is always a treat and they wanted to share the secrets to that recipe. A warming and energising treat!

Did you know? Masala chai is packed full of goodness and is revered in Indian households for its immunity boosting properties. It is especially helpful to drink this when you have a cold to aid a quick recovery and to boost the immune system.

  • Ginger (adrak) reduces inflammation and is a powerful antioxidant.
  • Cardamom (choti elaichi). These are light green in colour with tiny, black seeds inside. These are good mouth freshners and assist with digestion.
  • Cloves (laung). This aromatic dried flower bud has many medicinal type properties, including supporting liver health and helping regulate blood sugar levels
  • Cinnamon (daalacheenee)This miracle spice can treat type 2 diabetes, cure bad cholesterol, has strong antibacterial properties and can even help manage polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS)
  • Black Pepper (kaalee mirch). This provides essential nutrients for your tissues and boosts intestinal health

Serving
2-3 people

Ingredients

  • 3-4 pieces of ginger
  • 4-5 crushed cardamoms
  • 5-6 cloves
  • 1-2 small pieces of cinnamon stick
  • 4-5 full peppercorns
  • 2 cups of water
  • 2 teabags (English breakfast or other tea of your choice)
  • 1 cup milk
  • Optional added spice: ½ tsp fennel seeds

 Method

  1. Add the ginger, cardamon and cloves, cinnamon and peppercorns to the water in a saucepan. Bring to a boil. Let it simmer with these spices for 5 minutes.

  2. Then add 2 teabags and let it boil on slow heat for a few minutes.

  3. Then add the milk and boil further for five minutes.

  4. Strain into a cup and enjoy with added honey or sugar as per your taste.
